Teaching Experience and InterestsI have given tuition in guitar, music technology, composition and music theory since 1997 covering all ages and levels - privately, in a music centre, at music workshops and at local schools. I have taken pupils through various graded exams, aided pupils with performance, music theory, music technology and composition aspects of BTEC, A-Level and GCSE music and am currently tutoring my longest standing pupil (7 years) through his grade 8 guitar. In addition, I am also experienced in teaching beginners of all ages - ranging from aged six to late forties. I currently have over one hundred pupils on my books. I have experience of teaching in schools and currently teach guitar at Knutsford High School, Middlewich High School, Hartford Manor Primary School, St Wilfred’s Primary School, Bexton Primary School and Underwood West Primary School. My main areas of expertise lie in electric guitar (particularly blues, jazz, rock and folk), computer based music, music technology, music theory (particularly jazz and popular music theory) and writing music for a variety of ensembles.
Guitar Training and Education I have studied and played the guitar for about twelve years, studying at Salford University on a performance based course. I have studied guitar with Andy Watson (session guitarist and writer for Guitarist Magazine), Brian Kelly (guitar teacher at Salford University) and I still study with Mike Walker who is regarded by many to be the most important and influential jazz guitarist in Europe.
Workshop Experience & Events Management I have organised and co-ordinated a number of music workshops, concerts, jam nights and charity events. This involved booking the venues, advertising/publicising the events, booking musicians/entertainers for gigs and workshops, co-ordinating the running of the events, deciding/writing the content of workshops, doing the lighting and sound for concerts and charity events and maintaining a good relationship with the staff in the venues. The workshops I run are in local halls around Cheshire. These workshops involve several colleagues from the North-West area playing Drums, Bass and Keyboard with myself on the Guitar. The workshops so far have focused primarily on creativity, improvisation and rhythm studies/Latin percussion (which I studied for two years at Salford University with noted drummer/percussionist Dave Hassel). The workshops attracted people of all ages and abilities and now have a number of regular participants. I have organised many concert events both in Cheshire and Manchester. These include charity gigs in my local village, concerts in local towns, gigs for my own and other people’s bands and a weekly jam night in Manchester which ran for more than a year.
Performance ExperienceHaving played in bands since the age of fourteen I have performed at a wide variety of venues and events including Band on the Wall – Manchester; Chester Music Festival; The Roadhouse – Manchester; The Dance House – Manchester; Barfly – Sheffield; various DAN, AMP and Made of Stone events; Granvilles – Stoke; The Castle – Oldham; Exchange Square – Manchester (broadcast live on BBC Radio); In The City – Manchester; The Night and Day – Manchester. I have played in a variety of different ensembles covering several genres including solo gigs, jazz duos, a three-piece funk/rock band, indie bands, various cabaret bands and a ten-piece soul/funk playing both original material and covers. I have always played a pre-dominant role in each of these ensembles both as the front man, singing, playing guitar, and as a prolific songwriter/composer.
Music Technology I am familiar with all the major software packages (Logic, Cubase, Reason, Cooledit, Wavelab, ReCycle, Sibelius, Acid etc…) and have used these packages extensively both in the writing/production of my own compositions and in recording other bands/artists. I have recording facilities at home and am familiar with a wide variety of mixing desks and outboard equipment. I also teach Music Technology privately in my studio at home. Location and MobilityI hold a full driving licence and own my own car. Having lived in both Cheshire and Manchester, I am familiar with a wide geographic area and am happy to travel to various locations.
